Our Leading Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Position.

At first glance, this work may look closer to a difficult academic quiz rather than a new pop album by a musician who just had a previous single was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided across four distinct sections and sung in thirteen languages, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album investigating feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily change, often via the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme handled with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot skyward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the efforts of other pop stars appear quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in escape overly intellectual chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, and sole credit going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, its stakes feel much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What really elevates this fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she is breaking your heart in two, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stirring Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo crashes down like cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener never exactly know—nor want to know—where it is going next."

Nearly every song concludes at a completely different place than where it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a delicate symphony before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic style starts out moody and brooding, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act on Lux involves straddling the line between bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved her first work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in English swells on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. That trick is echoed on another powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While other big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast at which the guests around the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
